It is proposed that the pathogenesis for recurrent genital herpes is damage of Qi and Yin due to dampness evils combined with other evils. The treatment principle should be rectifying the vital Qi and eliminating evils, so methods of supple- menting Qi and nourishing Yin and clearing heat and eliminating dampness and evils should be adopted. The newly diagnosed gen- ital herpes can be treated with the classic prescription called Gancao Xiexin Decoction while the recurrent cases can be treated with Shenqi Zhipao Formula.
