In order to explore the esthetical values in the wood structure of Cathaya argrophylla ,anatomi- cal structure of this wood was studied by means of wood anatomy and scanning electron microscopy, and esthetical analysis on wood anatomical structure was earried out from the angle of esthetical application. The results showed, the longitudinal tracheids looked like a structure of skeleton on cross section, giving beautiful feeling of strength; the longitudinal resin canals produced a constitutional beauty of centripetal form on cross section; the transverse resin canals, with the ray cells together, looked like spindles, and fully illustrated the beauty of smoothness and softness of natural curves; the pit membrane and aperture of bor- dered pits on radial section appeared as wheel and eye respectively, and the structure was so perfect and the image so lifelike that everyone could not help gasping in admiration at them; the spiral thickenings on the inner side walls of longitudinal tracheids shaped as "S" , and their orientation and density illustrated the beauty of mathematical logic perfectly. These beautiful structures existed inside the wood of C. argrophylla could be used as basic elements to compose esthetical patterns, and lots of beautiful patterns of wood structure eould be derived from them. Such patterns of wood structure developed in this study were used to manufacture wood decoration boards. Such kinds of decoration boards with wood structure patterns could be used in furniture design. A trial manufacture of a set of multi-function table and ehair from decoration boards with wood structure patterns of C. argrophylla was carried out in this study to explore a new direc-tion for furniture design and manufacture. This kind of esthetical patterns of wood structure could also be used as decoration patterns in textile industry.
