Interactions between cationic gemini surfactants, 1,2-ethane bis ( dimethyl alkyl ( C, H2n+ 1 ) ammonium bromide) ( n = 10 and 12), and a neutral polysaccharide, dextran, in aqueous solution were investigated by means of viscosity, specific conductance and UV spectra. Dextran displays an electrolyte - electroviscous effect in aqueous solution containing gemini surfactants 10-2-10 and 12-2-12 due to the molecular interactions between dextran and the suffactants. An increase in the degree of micelle ionization of gemini surfactants was found in the presence of dextran in aqueous solution. In addition, the results demonstrate also that interactions of gemini surfactant 12-2-12 with dextran in aqueous solution are stronger than that of 10-2-10 with dextran, owing to longer hydrocarbon chain length of the surfactant 12-2-12.
