Abstraet:WLAN Mesh networks employing the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function { DCF ) scheme as a basic Medium Access Control ( MAC } protocol have been shown to suffer from serious throughput unfairness among competing flows. For analyzing the MAC fairness in WLAN-Mesh Networks, computer simulation is mostly preferred by researchers. However, since there exists de- viation between computer software models and real network environment, the simulation results may be biased away the true, thus, decreasing their credibility. The hardware in loop simulation is a kind of simulation technique which incorporates actual network de- vices with traditional computer simulations. Due to its obvious advantages, more and more network researchers pay attention to this kind of simulation technique. This paper aims to analyze the MAC fairness in WLAN-Mesh Networks by means of the hardware in loop network simulation system. Firstly, the limitation of computer simulation and analysis of MAC fairness in WLAN-Mesh Net- works is pointed out. Secondly, the hardware in loop network simulation system based on EXata is built with self-developed commu- nication terminals. Finally, simulations in different network environment are carded out, and a detailed analysis of MAC fairness in WLAN-Mesh Networks based on the results is given. Key words: WLAN-Mesh networks ; MAC protocol ; fairness ; hardware in loop simulation
