A comparative analysis of the morphology and size of the charcoal fragments in the surface soil under four vegetations in the Jinfo Mountains reveal considerable differences between forest communities and herb communities. In morphology, charcoal fragments in the surface soil of subalpine meadow are rel- atively thin and most are rectangular or like a long bar in shape. Their vertical margins are even and straight while part of the horizontal fracture is even and straight and the other end is uneven and irregular. Charcoal fragments in the surface soil under the forest community are thick, and most of them are subor- bicular or rectangular in shape, with a rough margin. As for their size, the charcoals from forest are rela- tively small, with an L/W ratio of 1.56±0.05 while the L/W ratio of charcoals from subalpine meadow is 1.77±0.10.
