Current situation and outlook of the utilization of pepper heterosis in China in recent years were reviewed, and the disadvantages of hybrid seed production were analyzed. Emphases are placed on applications of gene engineering on heterosis utilization of pepper. Principles and methods of gene engineering to create male sterility on pepper were introduced, and the maintenance of gene engineered male sterility lines and methods of fertility restoring were brought forward.
