The effect of three kinds of pipes, such as stainless steel, copper and polypropylene (PPR) pipes, on water quality of direct drinking water was investigated by monitoring variations of parameters of total organic carbon ( TOC), turbidity, total bacterial number and dissolved metals in pipe soaking experiment. The results show that the copper pipe has a poor stability, and the dissolved copper concentration exceeds the national standards after 1 hour of soaking, however, the copper pipe is able to restrain some bacteria. When the stainless steel pipe is soaked, an increase in turbidity and the nickel concentration to exceed the national standards appears after an extended period. The PPR pipe has better stability, however, trace phenolic organic pollutants dissolve into the water during soaking. When there are some bacteria in water, bacteria were discovered breeding in large amount.
