Understanding of the mechanical properties of natural gas-hydrate-bearing sediments (GHBS) is practically important for simulating the wellbore stability, geomechanical response to gas extraction from a gas-hydrate reservoir and geohazards induced by hydrates. This review summed up the research methods for mechanical properties of GHBS including in-situ test, experimental simulation test and numerical simu lations, and emphasized the summary of mechanical characteristics of GHBS in ocean and permafrost are as. The differences in mechanical properties between these two areas were also compared. Except the qual itative analysis on effect of hydrate formation and dissociation on mechanical properties of GHBS, numeri cal simulations and engineering designs for hydrate reservoirs also require quantificational estimation by building correlations between hydrate saturation and mechanical parameters of GHBS. Therefore, the pa per concluded the present qualitative research progress on the mechanical properties of GHBS and proposed some suggestions for its future research.
