Chronic pruritus means that pruritus lasts more than six weeks. It not only brings patients tremendous physical and mental burdens, but also reduces qualities of their life. There is a significant proportion of chronic pruitus patients suffered from emotional distresses, making their illness into a vicious circle. Amitriptyline, doxepin, sertraline, mirtazapine, escitalopram and other antidepressants could be used in the treatment of chronic pruri- tus ,especially applicable to refractory pruritus, neoplastic pruritus, and nephrogenie pruritus. These antide- pressants achieve significant curative effect and improve emotional distress in the treatment of chronic puritus.
