The influence of tartaric acid ( H2 tart) and its salts on formation, inhibition and therapy of urinary stones is summarized. The discussion in details includes : the chelation of tartrate with Ca^2+ ion, the induction of dihydrate and trihydrate calcium oxalate, the modulation of crystal faces and morphology, the inhibition to nucleation, growth and aggregation of calcium oxalate crystals, and the regulation of metabolism so as to decrease the probability of urolithiasis. The effect of the counterions of tartaric acid on the inhibition activity is also discussed
