Sheng is one of Chinese traditional wind instrument which has a history of over 3000 years. Known as the most popular Chinese pipe organ, Sheng plays an important role in the Chinese national orchestra. But its sound power level has never been carefully measured. The SWLs(Sound Power Levels) spectrum of Sheng is measured for the first time in a reverberation chamber. Two qualified musicians performe on their own instruments in the center of the reverberation chamber. The radiated sound energy and dynamic ranges of the Shengs are investigated by four-channel acoustic measuring equipments. Typical sound power values are obtained through averaging when melodies, music scale and single notes performed. The SWLs measurement of 24 reeds traditional Sheng is demonstrated in details, while the SWLs measurement results of other ameliorant Shengs are also given.
