IP-intensive Industries are those with more intellectual properties per employee than average, and their competitiveness is an important part of a country's international trade competitiveness. Based on the 2012 report "Intellectual Property and the U.S. Economy: Industries in Focus" by U. S. Department of Commerce, the IP-intensive industries of both US and China are identified, and the competitive and complementary aspects of the two countries' IP-intensive products trade are evaluated. It reveals that China's strength lies in the huge export quantity of several single IP-intensive products, but US has advantages in many IP-intensive products and the export is relatively balanced. The two countries are complementary in IP-intensive exports, and they mainly conduct inter-industry trade.
