This paper differentiates neutral pointing from neutral demonstratives and argues that the former is usually used to identify the referent but not to indicate the distance from the pointing center to the addressee, while the latter are not related to distance, but can show distance meaning when used in contrastive context and their distance meaning varies with the change of context. Medial demonstratives, which are the unmarked forms of demonstratives, have fixed distance meaning.
