Objective To analyze the variation of urinary arsenic species and urinary total arsenic (TAs) along with time and its impact on urinary TAs after consumption of seafood among volunteers. Methods Forty-seven volunteers (23-26-years old,26 mate,21 female) refrained from eating any seafood for at least 72 h before commencing the seaweed ingestion experiment. The volunteers then consumed seafood in one meal. The urine samples were collected on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th, 60th and 72nd hour after consumption of seafood. The cross-sectional survey methodology was used, and the urine samples of 55 fishing village residents were randomly selected. All of the urine samples were determined for the urinary arsenic species (MMA and DMA) and TAs by hydride generation atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results After intake of seafood, the levels of TAs in the urine samples of volunteers increased with the duration after intake, reached the peak at 36th hour, then decreased gradually, the same trend was found in DMA. Among female volunteers, higher level of DMA was found in urine samples compared with that in male (P〈0.05), the peak of TAs appeared 12 h earlier than that of male did. The significantly higher levels of MMA,DMA and TAs were observed in urine samples from fishing village residents, among which the TMA was specially detected ,compared with those from controls. Conclusion After consumption of seafood among volunteers, the levels of TAs in the urine samples, mainly consisting of DMA, increases significantly. Female shows higher capability to perform the metabolism and excretion of arsenide compared with that of male. TAs in the urine samples of fishing village residents mainly consists of DMA and TMA.
