Glutamate is a major excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is one of the most strongly implicated factors in excitotoxicity. The presence of NMDA-type glutamate receptors has been reported in non-neuronal tissues. Recent studies showed that NMDARs differentially express in lung, and participate in many kinds of pulmonary diseases.
