The traditional defensive settlements are compared with modern ones and the construction mode, features and functions of defensive buildings in the process of urban morphology evolution in the southwest are introduced. Three construction features in the ＂New Rural Construction＂ of Shatang in Liuzhou are presented： first, the overall functions of modern settlement are more comprehensive than traditional ones; second, the defensive buildings are constructed with the same standard; third, the social space of inner defensive buildings are of the same quality and size. It is pointed out that modern defensive settlement is of great significance for urban history study.
