The combustion process in a 300 MW tangentially fired boiler furnace employing inferior bituminous coal and anthracite as fuel, injected at different floor levels, has been simulated in two ways. One way is calculation by the twomixture-fraction/probability density function approach, assuming the simultaneous presence of 2 kinds of coal of different property. Another way is using the single-mixture fraction/probability density function method, assuming a single coal blend of weighted average property. Simulation and actual test measured results show that the temperature and the oxygen concentration distribution in the furnace is nonuniform, but symmetric across comers and that the two-mixture-fraction / PDF calculation approach is more in conformity with the actual combustion process of coal blends.
