Objective To investigate the effect of the supplement of full doze of zinc on the neurological function of rats with spi- nal cord ischemia - reperfusion injury. Methods The models of spinal cord I/R injury were established with 40 male SD rats. They were divided into four groups: sham operation group, model group, zinc -high dietary group (ZH) and zinc -deficient dietary group (ZD). The hindlimb motor function of the rats in the four groups was evaluated with BBB score and footprint analysis, and the number of NeuN - positive cells was also measured. Results The rats in the ZH group had higher BBB scores at any time during the experi- ment than those in the other three groups, with statistically significant difference (P 〈 0. 01 ). The footprint analysis showed that the stride length of the rats in the ZH group was significantly improved ( P 〉 0. 05 ) , while the stride width was not. At each time point af- ter operation, the number of NeuN - positive cells of the rats in the ZH group was significantly higher than that in the model group and the ZD group. Conclusion The supplement of full doze of zinc can help the recovery of the hindlimb motor function of the rats with spinal cord ischemic reperfusion injury, and protect them from nerve injury.
