Abstract The research objective of information science of traditional Chinese medicine is to solve the bottleneck problem impeding the development of traditional Chinese medicine, promote the inheritance and innovation development of theory and methodology of TCM, and promote the improvement of the clinical efficacy by improving the ability of utilization of TCM information. Big data is characterized by a huge data volume, many data types, low value density and fast processing speed. The characteristics of TCM data and big data are compared, how to re-examine the characteristics of TCM information science promoted by the big data era is explored, and the connotation of TCM information theory is profoundly understood. Through the analysis of the relation between big data and TCM information science, opportunities, tool and method are searched for research and development of traditional Chinese medicine.
