In the retina, Muller cells are considered to have stem cell properties and regenerative ability. Stimulating the endogenous stem cells to proliferate and dedifferentiate into retinal progenitor cells may be one of the important strategies for the treatment of retinal diseases. In the retina of higher mammals, however, the spontaneous dedifferentiation ability of Muller cells is very limited. In recent years, studies have found that some growth factors, transcription factors, extracellular matrix can promote the dedifferentiation and regeneration ability of Muller cells through a series of signaling pathways. Ascertaining these regulatory mechanisms of signaling pathways will be a great help to utilize the endogenous stem cells to treat retinal diseases.
