The paper reviews advances in NAPL source remediation from soil and groundwater systems by surfactant enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) technology. Mechanisms of SEAR include micellar solubilization and mobilization. Surfactant selection is the key to a successful design of a remediation effort. It is generally accepted that the best strategy to remediate subsurface NAPL contamination is to first remove the bulk NAPL source pollutants by SEAR,followed by bioremediation or natural attenuation for further polishing.
