Mudstone in Nanning basin have the characteristics of short diagenetic time,fracture development,high over consolidation and hardly giving intact rock core,etc. Through a research on the consolidation characteristics of mudstone,the classification of Types I and II over consolidation is established based on whether the mudstone after drying is disintegrable. The strength of mudstone from Nanhu and Beihu was compared,and the effects of over consolidation,water retention capability,disintegration and expansibility on mudstone strength were studied.
