The velocity of debris flow is not only a key part of debris flow kinematics but also one of the key parameters in the design of debris flow control works. This paper introduced the approaches and achievements of field observation and laboratory test of debris flow velocity in the world, presented the researches of debris flow velocity distribution and methods of estimating debris flow velocity. Based on the research status and available technologies at present, the main contents and developing directions of the field observation and laboratory test of debris flow velocity and the researches of debris flow velocity distribution and velocity calculation were proposed
