Ethyl 2-cyano-5-(dimethylamino)-3-methoxypenta-2,4-dienoate(2) was prepared by con- densation of N, N-dimethylforrnamide dimethyl acetal with ethyl 2-cyano-3-methoxybut-2-enoate, which was obtained by condensation of ethyl cyanoacetate with trimethyl orthoacetate. 4-hydroxy-2- pyridone was synthesized by cyclization of 2 in 80% acetic acid to provide ethyl 4-methoxy-2-oxo-1,2- dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate and then by demethylation and decarboxylic reaction in 48% HBr solution. The total yield was 31%. The structure was characterized by 1H NMR, IR and MS.
