To efficiently identify the case-same shape letters in the Uighur new writing ,after analyzing the characteristics of the Uighur new writing ,a method based on the template matching was proposed for distinguishing case-same shape letters .The ratio of the current letter’s outer-contour-size and the average values of all letters’s outer-contour-sizes were calculated ,then upper-case and lowercase letters were identified according to the characteristics that the outer contour of uppercase letters was larger than that of lowercase letters in the case-same shape letters .The results show that the method is effective to overcome the short-comings of the traditional template matching method that the uppercase and lowercase of the case-same shape letters are easy to be confused ,and it significantly improves the recognition rate of the system .
