Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor(HB-EGF) is a member of the EGF family, which possesses a strong propensity to bind heparin. Biological activation of HB-EGF is similar to that of EGF. HB-EGF and other members of EGF are involved in the regulation of keratinocyte growth. HB-EGF may play a key role in the early pathogenesis of psoriasis and the psoriatic keratinocyte growth. Retinoid acid may regulate the expression of HB-EGF in psoriatic epidermis by some mechanism, which inhibits proliferation of epidermis and induces normal differentiation. The origin, function of HB-EGF as well as the relation between HB-EGF and psoriasis are discussed.
