By substituting a definite integral for the sum of finite slices, an analytical tormula for the safety factor in the simplified Bishop's method can be derived. In this case, the safety factor can be calculated from the iterative solution of an algebraic equation. This avoids the shortcomings of complicated computations and possible non-convergence problems during calculations started with an improper initial value in the finite slice method. The analytical formulae can also be used for locating the most dangerous critical slip surface and for determining the corresponding minimum safety factor of the slope. The safety factor of the simplified Bishop's method is greater than the Sweden slice method by 6%-7%.
