According to the characteristics of the target recognition in ballistic missile defense （BMD） system,the requirements of the recognition characteristics and the pattern recognition technology for the BMD system are pointed out. Then, the feature extraction and recognition technologies of the infrared and radar for the BMD system are reviewed systematically. Next, the pattern recognition methods are summarized in the BMD system and are divided into five categories, such as the statistical pattern recognition, the expert system method,and so on. The technology development trends of the pattern recognition are discussed at last.
