Some basic problems about limit ice pressure analysis on slope lining of a reservoir are discussed, namely the dominant mechanism, failure criterion and failure mode. By using qualitative analysis, It is demonstrated that the limit ice pressure is controlled by the ultimate capacity of an ice cover; Contrasting typical conditions under which the maximum ice pressure have been observed with the mechanical properties of ice, it is proved that ultimate failure of ice cover should be dominated by fracture criterion instead of strength criterion; A series of tests of simulating failure are carried out, by which it is determined that the dominant failure mode of ice cover is creep buckling instead of fracture by compression. These researches have set a base to develop a new predicting method of ice pressure with fracture mechanics.
