Objective In order to know the effects of improving water in endemic arsenism area on concentrations of As and other trace elements in human body, distributions of arsenic and other trace elements in single hair of female patients who have been drinking improved water for one year were studied. Methods The concentrations of 11 elements in single hair of serious and minor endemic arsenism female patients were determined by scanning proton microprobe ( SPM ). Results The highest concentrations of As, Fe, Cu, K, Mn, Ni, St, and Ti were found in serious endemic arsenism group, while the lowest contents of these elements were found in normal control group. The concen tration of Ca and Zn were highest in healthy people hair. There were extremely significant differences in contents of he above mentioned elements ( P 〈 0. 05 or P 〈 0. 001). Conclusions Improving drinking water is an effective way for reducing As in patient bodies. Meanwhile, homeostasis of other trace elements were maintained.
