A scheme of scalable video multicasting using active networks (SVM-AN) is proposed,in which server, clients and the intermediate nodes within the active networks construct a scalable multicast architecture. Raw video streaming is scalable compressed and marked at the server. Clients subscribe suitable video streaming according to their network bandwidths and processing capacities. Using the processing capacity of intermediate nodes within the active network, SVM-AN filters out part of video stream with lower priority to adapt to different video quality requirements for heteroge- neous network users. Compared with receiver-driven layered multicast (RLM), the simulation results show that the SVM-architeeture, which improves overall network utilization efficiency, provides more stable bandwidth, end-to-end delay, smaller packet loss rate, and more stable video playback quality requirements for heterogeneous network users.
