Working memory contents may be crucial to resolve the competition for visual attention amongst different stimuli in the scene. The present study aimed to explore the effect of feature value information being actively held in verbal working memory on visual selective attention. Participants in Experiment 1 were asked to perform a probe discrimination task during the retention interval of verbal working memory. The results showed that response times to probes were slower on the trials containing the memory matches than on the neutral trials where there were no memory matches. However, this effect was not observed in Experiment 2 where there was no memory requirement. The current findings suggest that feature value information held in verbal working memory can automatically guide attention in favor of the matching features in the visual field.
