The city of New Orleans in the United States, suffers from the frequent disasters of hurricane storm surges. Its most areas are below sea level and the innate disadvantage makes it vulnerable to hurricanes. On August 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina attacked the city and caused a total economic lost of about $ 75 billion, almost double the previously most expensive storm, Hurricane Andrew in 1992, that has made Katrina the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States. The coastal area of South China is prone to typhoon disasters. It is important for the metropolitan areas in South China to learn lessons from New Orleans, from which some measures are suggested : 1 ) strengthen the consciousness of prevention of typhoon storm surge disasters ; 2) protect the beach foreland which stands up against typhoon storm surge ; 3 ) intensify and improve emergency plan of preventing typhoon storm surge; 4 ) take global environment change into consideration in coping with typhoon storm surge hazards.
