Implementation of target coverage with QoS requirements remains a challenge for wireless sensor networks. This is an NP-complete problem here, and can still be formulated based on linear programming technique. However, directly solving this optimization seems desperately complex due to the combinatorial complexity. Thus a minimum monitoring energy cost based approximation algorithm was proposed to solve this problem. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our approach can decrease system energy consumption sharply and therefore prolong network lifetime efficiently.
