Polarimetric scattering characteristics of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) have been recently applied to sea-ice thickness retrieval, however some features implicit in the quad-polarization SAR data have not been fully utilized. Therefore, the ability of the polarimetric characteristics responding to sea-ice thickness was explored using first-year level sea-ice thickness measurements and synchronous quad-polarization RADARSAT-2 SAR images. It is found that the alpha angle is sensitive to sea-ice thickness.Their correlation is validated theoretically, and the sea-ice thickness inverted using the empirical relations agrees well with the measurements. The errors using this approach are small compared with those by commonly used methods. The study results confirm the role of the alpha angle in year round level sea-ice thickness retrieval, and the advantage of sea-ice thickness retrieval using the information derived from quad-polarization SAR data.
