Silica rods with amphiphilie surface properties were synthesized and their effects on the morphology of immiscible polyisobutylene ( PIB )/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) blends were investigated via online flow- visualization technique and theology. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed that amphiphilic silica rods tended to distribute at the interface and within the PIB phase. In addition, the flow-induced coalescence behavior of droplets was found to strongly depend on the particle content and the blending composition ratio. The addition of a small amount of amphiphilic silica rods could promote the coalescence of droplets, while coalescence was suppressed effectively at high particle loadings.
