Poly(vinyl alcohol)1788(PVA)was modified by a cyanuric chloride derivative containing two azobenzene groups through dehydrochlorination reaction between the chlorine atom and the hydroxyl.Infrared spectra and 1 H-nmR analysis indicated that azobenzene moiety could be successfully grafted to PVA in the mixture of 1,4-dioxane and deionized water,and about one-twelfth of the hydroxyls in PVA participated in the reaction.The azobenzene-modified PVA can be dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide and deionized water.Its UV-vis absorption spectrum is similar to that of azobenzene and exhibits typical reversible photoisomerization behaviors.
