The initial design stiffness matrix was regarded as the precondition matrix. The preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method was proposed for the finite element reanalysis of large structural optimization. This algorithm is not necessary to form and store the stiffness matrix of modified structures. It can save memory and has a high precision and convergence speed. The finite element reanalysis of an arch dam shows that the proposed method rapidly achieves excellent approximate results even with many changes of the design variables.
