A brief introduction to the important interdisciplinary field of nuclear astrophysics is given.With a number of results recognized by the Nobel Prize in Physics as a guide,the progress and challenges are described mainly for the big bang cosmology,solar neutrinos,stellar evolution and its end points,as well as nuclear physics and the origin of the elements.
