A new Ar-Ar laboratory has been built up in Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, equipped with a 5400Ar mass spectrometer from the GV instruments in UK, a MIR10-50W CO2 and a UP-213 UV lasers from the New Wave Research in USA. The UV ablating laser is for the Ar-Ar laser probe with spot sizes from 4 μm to 110 μm in diameter. The CO2 laser is for the Ar-Ar laser stepwise heating on the grains of the K-rich minerals or whole rocks. As far as know, two manufacturers, the ISI Insulator Seal and the CeramTec, make the viewports transmitting CO2 laser. These viewports are very expensive. Dr Huaiyu He and I respectively tried and succeeded to make practicable CO2 laser viewports. The second viewport designed by me is shown in Fig. 2. The blank of this viewport is very low and fit for the Ar-Ar laser stepwise heating on a single grain of K-rich mineral. Using this viewport, we have finished Ar-Ar laser stepwise heating analyses of a hundred irradiated samples (biotite, muscovite, hornblende, amphibole and basalt and peridotite whole rock) and standard samples, and high quality dating results have been obtained. The Ar-Ar dating results of a biotite from the Longling granite, western Yunnan by laser stepwise heating are shown in Table 1 and Fig. 1. Dr J.R. Wijbrans from the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam visited our laboratory in May 8 - 16, 2005. In his short summary of the visit activities to the National Natural Science Foundation of China, he said: “After a week working in the laboratory and reviewing laboratorium procedures, I think now the new GIG-CAS Ar-Ar laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility and capable to produce top quality data sets. ”
