Along with the increase of transmission capacity and distance driven by broadband applications,the Non-Linear Dis-tortion (NLD)of signals in fiber-optic transmissions has become one of the major limiting factors to fiber-optic communication systems.This paper summarizes the latest developments of Non-Linear Compensation (NLC)technologies in the optical and e-lectrical domains,analyzes and compares their mechanisms,characteristics and practical applications with the focus on Digital Signal Processing (DSP)-based NLC for digital coherent optical communication systems and the trend of their future develop-ment.
