The paper examines walkability measures in rail transit station areas in selected neighborhoods in Shanghai, taking into consideration of factors such as pedestrian distance, time and psychology. It is found that route length, block size and waiting time to cross the arterial roads are the main factors to determine pedestrians' willingness to take the rail transit.. In addition, other environmental factors such as safety, continuity and pleasurability can also affect pedestrians' perception of time and space to varying degrees. Furthermore, there is a widening gap between the pedestrianenvironmentin different types of neighborhoods. For example, the degradation of walking environment inperiurban areas reduces walkability and should deserve more attention.
