The popular novels＇ material research is a basic work. By the means of carefully examining and sorting out the document literature,it is convenient for us to have a deep understanding about the text form the perspective of the materials. This article discusses the ideas about the research of popular novels＇ materials, tak- ing three pieces of characters or plots commonly presented in novels of the Ming and Qing dynasties as an example. The paper puts forward that novel material research should be divided into three steps：drawing materials widely, identifying them carefully and tracing back to the origin deeply.
