The ability to replay the data exchanged during an execution, called by HLA federation playback, is an important capability in HLA distributed simulation environment The roles of HLA federation playback were described. A general purpose approach to HLA federation playback was proposed and implemented, which looked at the uses for playback and explored the technical issues of how to meet the requirements. By using this approach, a general purpose HLA federation playback tool was implemented. The tun efficiency of the tool was tested and analyzed. The lessons drawn from the experience of design and development were discussed. Considering the high run-efficiency, this approach is applicable for those applications which demand fast playback rate and has already been applied in some HLA simulation projects.
