The concentrations and distribution of mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) in the water and sediment of the drinking water source area of the Huangpu River were investigated. The results showed that the concentration of Hg in the water ranged from 0. 0407 to 0. 2287 μg·L^-1 with an average of 0. 1492μg·L^-1 and the concentration of Asranged from 0.6087 to 5.2667μg·L^-1, with an average of 2.7442μg·L^-1.In 83.3% of the sample sites in this investigation, the Hg concentrations exceeded the Type Ⅲ standard of the GB3838-2002 Environmental Quality Standards for surface water, while the As concentrations were all below this standard, The concentration of Hg in sediment ranged from 0. 0479 to 0. 4169 mg·kg^-1 with an average of 0. 1488 mg·kg^-1 and the concentration of As was between 4.84 and 9.01 mg·kg^-1, with an average of 6.59 mg·kg^-1. A total of 57.1% of the sample sites had Hg concentrations exceeding the soil background of Shanghai, while the As concentrations were all below that of the background soil. The Hg and As concentrations in water and sediment were relatively higher at the Eco-indnstrial Park rivers and the mouths of rivers. Accumulation coefficients of sediment Hg and As ranged from 209 to 2361 and 1113 to 11171, respectively. The concentration of Hg and As had significant positive correlation with TOC in sediment, which indicated that the concentration of TOC was the principal factor controlling sediment Hg and As concentration. According to the distribution characteristics of Hg and As in the water and sediment of the drinking water source area of the upper reaches of the Huangpu River, it is concluded that these pollutants mainly come from industry, agriculture, domestic sewage, upper stream rivers, secondary-pollution from river sediment, and pollutant emissions from ships.
