The mineralization of soil organic matter can be accelerated or retarded by the addition of exogenous organic matter to soil, thus causing positive or negative priming effect. The mechanisms of the priming effect and its influential factors have been reviewed in the article. The qualities and quantities of soil native organic matter, added exogenous organic matter and root exudation can determine the direction and intensity of the priming effect. The availability of added exogenous organic matter is the most important factor to priming effect.
