The paper discusses the black-start capability of different types of CCPPs and the feasibility to use them as black start units. The black starting of a 150 MW CCPP unit and a 300 MW steam unit is simulated. Simulink is used to calculate the excitation inrush currents associated with the transformer energisation, considering the saturation effects and the three-phase unbalance. The dynamic processes of starting large asynchronous motors and load pickup in an isolated system are calculated by EDSA. Based on the simulation results, the paper proposes countermeasures to improve the feasibility of black-start by CCPP. The models can be applied to the formulation of restoration plans and field testing.
