By applying the continuous finite element methods for ordinary differential equations, the m order finite element methods for linear Hamiltonian systems are proved to be symplectic as well as energy conservative. The method conserves the energy for nonlinear Hamiltonian systems, too. The numerical results given in the present paper agree, with the theory.
