早期壮侗语和苗瑶语,因方言的差异,一些词的辅音韵尾变为相应的鼻音韵尾(或相反)。粤语有一批具“阳入对转”关系的词语,可能与壮侗、苗瑶底层有关。
This paper points out that at least 12 pairs of nasal/stop alternations in three Yue dialects (Guangzhou, Lianjiang and Nanning) are correspondent to those in Kam-Dai or Hmong-Mien languages. Early dialect variations in the languages of these two branches had made various words endings with stops developing into corresponding nasals (or vice versa). These variations are partially reflected in the Yue dialects, which contain sizable substrata originated from Kam-Dai and Hmong-Mien due to large-scale language shift after the early Yue speakers populated the southern land several centuries ago.
