Antimicrobial peptides （AMPs） are important bioactive polypeptides induced by the innate system of organisms. These peptides are of broad-spectrum activities against a wide range of microorganisms including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and can inhibit fungi, some enveloped viruses, parasites, and the growth of some tumor cells. AMPs have unique antibacterial mechanisms and may become a new alternative to antibiotics as well as a kind of green feed additive of high efficiency and high quality. In this review, it is discussed the classification, function, mechanism, and the application and development prospect of AMPs in the animal production.
